Are Heated Pools Worth It?

If you’re in the market for a new pool, you’re probably already considering whether or not you need a heater.
Of course, like most things in life, the answer isn’t always straightforward, which is why, this month, the Master Pools of Wilmington will be breaking down the key things you need to know.
Where are you located?
One of the biggest determining factors governing whether or not you need a heated pool is where you live.
For example, if you live in Florida, where the average temperature in winter is nearly 60 degrees, you could probably get away with never having to heat your pool and still have a long swim season.
However, if you live in any states further north, such as North Carolina, where winter temperatures can drop well below freezing, a pool heater is almost mandatory.
The different types of pool heaters
There are three different types of pool heater that you need to know about, these are:
- Gas-fired heaters: these heaters tend to heat a pool quickly, but they’re more expensive to run due to the cost of fuel. They’re ideal for pools that aren’t used too regularly, as you can just turn them on before your swim, and turn them off afterwards.
- Heat pumps: these heaters are electric and pose a higher upfront cost than a gas heater but offer cheaper running costs. They’re most efficient when air temperatures are above 50 degrees.
- Solar heaters: Solar heaters are usually similar in price to heat pumps and gas heaters (perhaps somewhere in the middle), but offer the cheapest running costs. The caveat here is that you have to be located somewhere southern to get the most out of them.
What’s the right pool heater for me?
While there a number of factors to consider when looking at which form of pool heating would be right for you, it’s fair to say that heat pumps are the most popular because of their significantly low running costs.
However, if you live in a northern state, you might want to consider a gas heater, as they will function quickly and properly regardless of the outdoor temperature.
How much can a heater extend my swim season?
If you choose to heat your pool, you can expect your swim season to last for at least two to three months longer – that’s nearly doubling the length of your swim season, which means you’re getting double the value out of your pool.
Plus, if you live in a southern state such as Florida or Georgia, a heat pump could allow you to comfortably swim all year round.
Conclusion
No matter where you live in the US, a pool heater is definitely worth it as it lets you get the most usage out of your swimming pool.
But, if you live in one of the hottest states, you might be able to get away with not having one if you so choose.
Heat pumps would be the best choice from an efficiency point of view, but if you live up north, then a gas heater might be the way to go.
